Two Bethany Greek Organizations Raises $4, 400 for Augusta Levy Learning Center & Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals

Beta Theta Pi and Phi Mu raised more than ever before for their philanthropies at this year’s Wingfest event, which took place on October 2 at the Beta house. Over $4,400 will be given to the Augusta Levy Learning Center in Wheeling, W.Va., and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN Hospitals) thanks to the event.

Wingfest is an annual event held on the Sunday of Homecoming weekend that proudly promotes a sense of togetherness for not only the philanthropies and the college students involved, but also for the chosen male relatives and/or loved ones. Dads, grandfathers, male professors—anyone whom the brother or sister deems a “father figure”—are invited to join the two groups by playing cornhole and eating delicious wings. This year, the profit was split by who contributed what; Beta obtaining all profit from the food, and Phi Mu—the raffle ticket sales.

The Augusta Levy Learning Center is a Wheeling-based organization and the first intensive autism treatment program in West Virginia. It provides autistic students with 30-40 hours of instruction each week, as well as individualized treatment for each child.

Beta Theta Pi Philanthropy Director Caleb King is extremely happy with the outcome and says that they are, “proud to be donating this much money to help further their cause of helping children with autism.”

CMN Hospitals aims to help sick children, whether they are diagnosed with cancer, a blood disorder, or something else. Phi Mu adopted this philanthropy in 1986, just three years after it was established. There are two locations near Bethany, one in Pittsburgh, PA, and the other in Morgantown,

WV. In relation to Bethany’s Beta Nu chapter, all funds are sent to the Morgantown location.

Haddae Allen, Phi Mu’s Philanthropy Chairwoman, explains that Wingfest provided not a fundraiser but a lifelong Bethany connection.

“Collaborating with Beta for Wingfest worked so well because they were able to capitalize on their strengths and us on ours, in order to have the best outcome. While everyone is in their own respective organization, working together for philanthropy events proves that we are all in Greek Life for the same reason: to benefit from our experience and from those around us,” Allen explains.

Other philanthropy events will occur throughout the year, including a 3v3 Basketball Tournament, hosted by Phi Mu, and a Home Run Derby, provided by Beta Theta Pi.
