Weirton Geriatric Center, as of the first quarter of 2026, was operated by Weirton Geriatric Center Esop, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reported. The facility, located in Hancock County, has remained under this ownership since Jan. 1, 1997.

The nursing home operates as a for-profit facility.

During this period, Weirton Geriatric Center earned a five-star overall rating from CMS, surpassing West Virginia’s average nursing home rating of 2.9. CMS assigns ratings by reviewing health inspections, staffing data, and the quality of care provided to residents.

CMS data shows the facility averaged 127.6 residents per day in the first quarter of 2026, with 137 beds available. At this time, the nursing home is independent and not affiliated with a hospital.

No fines or penalties were issued against Weirton Geriatric Center throughout the first quarter of 2026.

Hancock County, West Virginia, had a total of two for-profit nursing homes.

Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show the nation’s older adult population is growing while younger age groups are shrinking. From 2020 to 2024, Americans aged 65 and older increased by 13%, while those under 18 declined by 1.7%. The older adult population has expanded significantly over the past century, rising from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.

A 2021 study indicates nearly half of this age group, about 28 million people, may need long-term services and support. The study further projects that more than a third could eventually require nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
