Chris McPherson Leads TRIO Upward Bound Now at WLU

West Liberty University is now home to the TRIO Upward Bound program, under the direction of Chris McPherson, who began this new position on Feb. 13.

McPherson was hired by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission (Commission) to fill this position and his office is located on the first floor of Shaw Hall. Previously he was employed by WLU as its director of the Learning & Student Development Center.

I am excited to continue providing quality support services to students — now at the high school level — and partner with John Marshall and Weir High Schools. As a first-generation college graduate, I understand how challenging it can be to adequately prepare for the pursuit of a postsecondary degree while also learning how to navigate the college admissions process. Our team looks forward to assisting students in the Upward Bound Math-Science program strengthen their skills and prepare for success in college and their future careers,” McPherson stated.

McPherson’s new position was made possible by U.S. Department of Education grants announced recently by the Commission that provided $3 million to help low-income students in the Northern Panhandle who will be the first in their families to earn a postsecondary credential or degree.

Together with partner institution West Liberty University, the Commission will work over the next five years with students at John Marshall High School and Weir High School to encourage and support them in pursuing postsecondary education.

McPherson earned a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership and his undergraduate degree at Wheeling (Jesuit) University.
