October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and West Liberty University reminded campus of this with a special program honoring survivors and those who lost their lives to the disease.
“The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion joined Campus Ministries in presenting a keynote address and a special service in memory of our loved ones. We were pleased to show support and solidarity in this manner,” said Dr. Monique Akassi, Special Assistant to the President for DEI and Strategic Initiatives.
Held in Elbin Library, in the alcove where the Alumni Wall of Honor is located, the event was intimate and touching. Dr. Akassi, who is herself a survivor, read from her recent book, “The Breast Cancer Diaries.”
This memoir is available on Amazon and she had copies available for signing at the event, which she gave to attendees free of charge.
Light refreshments were provided and guests were encouraged to wear pink to show support. Guests also were offered a chance to place red cardinals on two memorial trees lit with mini white lights as a way to honor their deceased loved one. Cardinals are often seen as a symbol of our loved ones who have passed on.
Guests also were offered self-care items and warm socks. Campus Ministry created a faux window in which everyone could hang a ribbon with their loved one’s name or a hand representing the many helpers necessary to support those who are fighting breast cancer.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual campaign to raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer and to encourage screening and support.
