Volleyball Gets Sweep Over Notre Dame College on Halloween Night

On Saturday, the Wheeling University volleyball team (19-7, 13-1) hosted their annual Halloween night with costumes and themed events throughout the match. The Cardinals were able to find their hitting on the court as they took down Notre Dame College 3-0. The Cardinals fans came dressed to support their team and it wasn't hard to find the key to success for Wheeling on the offense.

That Cardinal offense was strong right from the get-go and, after trading the first four points of set one, went on a 5-0 run to take a 7-2 lead in the set. Tylah Yeomans started that run with a kill and was beginning what would be a big day on the court. After extending their lead to 8-4, Yeoman's number would be called again and she came up with a big kill to start another run. This time it was a 6-1 run and it moved the score to 14-5 in favor of Wheeling halfway through the set. It looked like the fighting Falcons would get back into the game as they battled back to make it a three-point deficit but Wheeling held them off and made it a 19-15 set late. The Cardinals would take it from there scoring six of the last seven points of the set and a Riley KIndall kill gave him a 25-16 sent one win.

Set two would feature the most competitive set of the night as neither team could get an advantage early. The Cardinals would go ahead 3-0 early in the set but every time Wheeling scored Notre Dame answered as the teams were locked at 8-8 in the early going. Kindall would spark the first run of the set for the Cardinals, a 6-0 run, that turned it into a 13-8 Wheeling advantage. Notre Dame College would battle back to make it 13-10 but Wheeling added three points of their own to push the lead up to six. Wheeling would continue to have to hold off the Falcons and late in the set took a 22-17 lead. Allonda Watkins would get a kill that sparked the final three points of the set as Wheeling won 25-17.

With the Cardinals already up 2-0 in the match Wheeling was looking to finish out the sweep heading into set three. However, Notre Dame got off to their best start in a set on the night taking a 5-2 lead early on. The Cardinals would then go on a 4-1 run to make it a 6-6 game and then took it farther by adding The next seven points to go ahead 13-6 as the set reached its halfway point. Notre Dame College stayed close throughout the set and as it got to the later portions trailed Wheeling 18-13. Watkins would pick up another kill and Wheeling added four straight points to go ahead 22-13 putting the match on the line. The Falcons would stay alive, with a 4-1 run that brought the score to 23-17. However, a Yeoman's kill and an attack error was enough to end the night as Wheeling picked up the 25-17 win and won the Match 3-0.

It was a big day for Tylah Yeomans, who led the offense with 15 kills and was one of three Cardinals to get into double digits. Allonda Watkins and Mady Winters followed right behind her with 11 kills each to round out the double digit attack. While the Cardinals did not hit over .300 this time, they still hit a respectable .275 led by 43 assists from setter Karly Niesen. Melia Gorrell led the back line with 15 digs getting the start as Wheeling's libero. Jordan West and Yeomans finished right behind her with 12 and 11 digs respectively as the Cardinals defense continues to shine in the later half of the season.

The Wheeling University volleyball team has a quick turnaround as they return to the court tomorrow for senior night when they host Bluefield State with tip off at 1:00 p.m. You can watch the game live by clicking HERE or follow along with live stats by clicking HERE.
