The Wheeling University Women's Soccer team (5-8-1, 5-6-1) finished up their week-long road trip in Glenville, West Virginia on Sunday. It was a wild offensive affair, with 11 goals combined between the two teams, but the Cardinals were able to come out on top 7-4. It was their fifth win in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play this season as they pick up a much-needrd win down the stretch.
Through the game's first 45 minutes, things were pretty standard with the team's scoring just three goals during that time. Mikayla Yarwood got the start in net for the Cardinals, and came up big making three saves to keep the game scoreless. Her team would pick her up in minute 18 when Mary DiFonzo shot a pass to teammate Kenadee Burgoyne, who found the back of the net to give Wheeling a 1-0 lead. A little under a minute later, the Cardinals were back on the attack as Talynn DeBartolo would notch her first goal of the night, and the Cardinals found themselves ahead 2-0. Glenville State would get on the board in the 26th minute, making it a 2-1 Wheeling lead. The Cardinals would head into halftime ahead by that same 2-1 score as they looked to continue the success in the second half.
However, the Pioneers would be the ones to come out strong as they scored the first two goals of the half and put Wheeling behind 3-2. They wouldn't be down for long as in the 59th minute, DeBartolo was back at it again. She brought the ball up field and scored her second goal of the game to tie the contest at 3-3. DeBartolo came up the field with another opportunity just four minutes later, but this time she sent the ball to DiFonzo. The sophomore would take advantage with her first goal of the day and just like that Wheeling had their one-goal advantage back. In the game's 78th minute, Wheeling made it a two-goal lead when Braedynn Porter put in a Penalty Kick Goal, but that lead was cut back to one on a Glenville State Penalty Kick that made it a 5-4 game.
With ten minutes to play, the offense wasn't done as DiFonzo scored her second goal of the game in the 84th minute to make it a 6-4 Wheeling advantage. The final Cardinals goal of the day came courtesy of Landree Wilkin, who found the net in the game's 87th minute. It was Wilkins first career goal during her senior season and made it a 7-4 Cardinal lead. Glenville State would have two more tries in the 88th minute but Yarwood was able to make the Save on both shots leading her team to the 7-4 victory. The seven goals were the most scored by the Cardinals this season as their offense took the forefront in what was a big win.
The offense was led by a pair of Cardinals who scored two goals in the game. Mary DiFonzo and Talynn DeBartolo each notching two goals in the contest, with DiFonzo finishing with two assists and DeBartolo finishing with one. The other Cardinal goals came courtesy of Braedynn Porter, Kenandee Burgoyne, and Landree Wilkin who each had one in the game. Mikayla Yarwood faced 16 shots in net on the night making 12 saves, tying her season high for 2022.
