The Wheeling University Men's Golf team began day one of the Dr. Wally Edgel Championship on Monday. Each of their four golfers had career-best performances as the team combined to shoot 309 and finished tied for 7th in the field. Each golfer had a strong day on the links with everyone posting a round score of 80 or less on the Par 72 course.
Leading the Cardinals was junior Austin Panhorst, who had a strong day shooting +1 on the Par 72 course. He fell three strokes shy of his season best effort, shooting 73 on the day as he got his tournament started off strong. It was his best score since the Vulcan Invitational back in early September, when he shot a 70 in the second round of competition. Panhorst was a consistent golfer throughout the day, hitting par on a majority of his holes as he competed with some of the best in the field. For the season, he has shot 80 or under in five of his seven rounds this season. With one more round to go before his fall season wraps up, Panhorst is hoping to add another sub 80 score to his showing as he heads towards the spring season.
Following behind Panhorst was Nick Zaller and Alex Parker, who each finished with a 78 on the day. For Zaller, it was back to where he was at the beginning of the year after a slow showing at the MEC Championships. He improved his round score by seven strokes from the final round and was in good position to start round two. For Parker, it was another career day as he shot 78 through the first 18 holes of the competition. His previous career-loe was 82, which he shot at the West Liberty Invitational, and he improved that stroke by four strokes . Rounding out the four-man team for the Cardinals was freshman Ethan Short, who finished with a collegiate best 80 through the first 18 holes of the event.
Round two of the Dr. Wally Edgel Championships will be played on Tuesday, October 11th, with tee time at 10 AM.
