Panhorst Bounces Back with +1 Effort on Day Two of Charleston Invitational

On Tuesday, the Charleston Invitational wrapped up from Edgewood Country Club. The Wheeling Men's Golf team maintained their 15th place standing in round two, shooting a 319 and dropping their total team score by four strokes from day one. The Cardinals had one golfer hit +1 for the day and saw each of four of their five athletes finish with a score of 85 or lower.

Leading the way for the Cardinals I'm their day two action was Austin Panhorst, who lowered his score by seven strokes to finish at +1 (72) for the round. He began his day on hole 12 and after a bogey started things off, he came back with three straight pars. He added a birdie on hole 16 and another on hole 18, sandwiching a bogey, and finished the back nine at even par for the day. As he moved to the front nine, he started with a bogey and followed with a birdie to even things out. He added another birdie on hole eight, but a double bogey would put him at +1 for the front nine. He ended his day with back-to-back pars on holes nine and 10 and was able to hold his plus one score. Panhorst finished one stroke shy of his career best effort, which he pulled off in the first invitational of the season, as he continues to grow.

There was a tie behind him with Blake Ring-Fish and Alex Parker each shooting an 81 in the second round. For Ring-Fish, the 81 was his best score of the season so far, and just two strokes off of his career best from last season. His best hole was #8 where he picked up his only birdie of the day and he added to that seven pars in his second round. The big thing for Ring-Fish was the improvement from round one to round two, dropping his score by Two strokes. Alex Parker had one of his best collegiate performances when he shot an 81, as he set a new personal best at the collegiate level. His best work came on the front nine when he shot +2 and registered his only birdie of the day. Both golfers got into the top 90 of the event with Ring-Fish finishing tied for 85th and Parker finished tied for 89th.

After a strong round one, Nick Zaller dropped to fourth on the team in round two after shooting an 89 on day two. Zaller had some trouble on the back nine, shooting +11 and added an average +7 on the front nine. It was the first time this season that Zaller had gone over the 80 stroke mark as he looks to bounce back next time. Ethan Short rounded out the top five for the Cardinals, shooting an 85 on the round and improving his day one performance by four strokes. It was a season-best performance for the freshman as he picked up seven pars on the afternoon. Many of the Cardinals showed improvement from day one to day two and they finished 10 strokes behind Virginia Wise U for 14th in the field. They continue to improve with every outing as they grow as a team.

The Wheeling University Men's Golf team is back in action on September 25th when they head to the West Liberty Invitational at Steubenville Country Club.
