The first full week of the 2022-23 Fall Athletics Sports season is in the books as most of Wheeling University's fall teams were in action. There were some big performances throughout the week and, on Tuesday, two of those performances were recognized with the Cardinals Male and Female High Flyer of the Week awards. Football's Kelvin Bazemore takes home the Male High Flyer of the Week Award and Volleyball's Berit Jones earns the Female High Flyer of the Week honors.
Both athletes had big performances over the week as they helped lead their teams to victories over non-conference opponents. The Wheeling University Football team took down Seton Hill 25-11 in their opening game of the season as the defense held the opposition to just 11 points on the day. It was the lowest point total allowed by the defense since they shut out West Virginia Wesleyan last October as they start the year 1-0 for the first time in program history. The Wheeling Volleyball team went 1-2 over the weekend at the Tampa Invitational, with their win coming in a 3-1 contest over Tusculum University. The defense held strong for the Cardinals throughout the match as they earned their second win of the season.
Bazemore had a career day in the Football team's opener against Seton Hill, finishing with 2.0 tackles, one pass breakup, and two interceptions in the team's 25-11 win. Both of his interceptions shut down scoring opportunities for the Griffins and allowed the Cardinals defense to play as well as they did. On the Griffin's first drive of the game, they drove down to the Wheeling six-yard line before Bazemore jumped in front of a pass intended for the endzone for his first career interception. Then, as the second half began, the Griffins were threatening to take the lead again, and once again got to the Wheeling six-yard line. Another pass that was headed to the endzone was cut off by Bazemore as he grabbed his second interception of the day. She also picked up her first kill of the season in that game as she helped the team to their second win of the season. Jones continues to lead Wheeling's defensive game and will play a big part in her team's success as they move through the season.
For the second straight week, the Wheeling Volleyball team has one of their athletes take home the Female High Flyer of the Week. Last week, it was Tylah Yeomans who took the award home after a strong offensive week. The Wheeling Football team had their first athlete earn Male High Flyer of the Week honors after Men's Soccer's Austin Aaron won the Male High Flyer of the Week award last season.
The next Wheeling University home athletic event is on Wednesday, September 7th, when Women's Soccer takes on Fairmont State at 5 PM.
