Brooke County Schools Partners With Bethany College, Introduces Bethany College – Brooke Collegiate Academy

BETHANY, W.Va. – Bethany College is excited to announce an incredible opportunity for area students that will not only fast track their college career, but could also save them thousands of dollars. The college is partnering with Brooke County Schools to enter into a Dual Enrollment Agreement—allowing students within the county to enroll in classes and obtain Bethany College credit while still in high school. This monumental agreement will be known as the Bethany College – Brooke Collegiate Academy.

This agreement comes during a time where educational costs and college debt are at the forefront of discussion across the United States. Both Bethany College and the Brooke County Board of Education are elated to be able to lessen the burden on area students by providing them with free college courses. In turn, this will allow Brooke County students to graduate college sooner and with less debt.

“It is widely known that secondary education and postsecondary education haven’t always worked hand-in-glove for the benefit of students. There exists in America a K-12 mindset and a postsecondary mindset,” says Bethany President Dr. Jamie Caridi. “This Collegiate Academy, where Brooke County High School students will come to campus to take college courses alongside Bethany students, is a coordinated effort to integrate the two systems in a thoughtful proactive way that improves student learning, persistence, and satisfaction.”

“Brooke County Schools is extremely proud and excited to partner with Bethany College in the creation of the Brooke Collegiate Academy,” says Brooke County Schools Superintendent Jeffrey Crook. “The Academy will provide an opportunity for eligible Brooke High School students to enroll and earn 15-18 college credit hours [per semester]. We are committed to making sure our students have the greatest opportunities available to be successful!”

This program makes it possible for students to complete a bachelor’s degree in only three years rather than four, if enrolled for the full academic year. Through this agreement, Brooke County Schools and the Board of Education will pay for all books, materials, course fees, and transportation to the college, while Bethany will provide qualified students with relevant courses taught by Bethany faculty members. Upon successful completion of each course, students will receive college credit.

“The partnership between Bethany College and Brooke County High School is the kind of relationship that Bethany is building within its community to meet the higher education needs of the next generation of West Virginians,” says Provost and Dean of Faculty Anju Ramjee. “This will enable Brooke County students to have the opportunity to experience college life and be taught by dedicated professors in their field of expertise. We are excited and looking forward to having these highly motivated high school students in our midst, adding to the vibrancy of the college campus.”

Brooke County students enrolling in courses will attend an orientation session prior to the beginning of the semester to acclimate themselves and their parents to the collegiate process.
