Women’s Basketball Releases 2022-23 Schedule in Start of New Era

the Wheeling University Women's Basketball team will be taking the court in just under two months as they begin a new era under Head Coach Anna Kowalska. As they get ready, they released their 2022-23 schedule on Tuesday featuring 13 home contests. They will host all their classic Mountain East Conference (MEC) rivals as well as some strong non-conference competition across the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC).

Last season, the Cardinals would make their second consecutive trip to the MEC Tournament, making it to the quarterfinals when they battled Glenville State University. Overall, the Cardinals went 8-20 overall and 7-15 in MEC play in a season that had it's share of ups and downs. They started off strong in conference play, going 2-2 over their first four games, and battles throughout the year to earn the #9 seed in the 2021 tournament field. They would open the MEC tournament against Alderson Broaddus, who they split the season series with, and came through with a 68-62 win. However, they would run into the eventual NCAA Division II National Champions, Glenville State, in the quarterfinals and their season came to an end. With several pieces returning, they have plenty to build off of heading into 2022-23.

Before the regular season even gets started, the Cardinals will face their first test when they go on the road to battle Ball State in an exhibition game. They will get a chance to battle Division I talent and see where they stand as they prepare for the season. That follows up with the annual MEC/PSAC crossover event at West Liberty University, where the Cardinals will take on Lock Haven and Seton Hill University. Then, they continue their trend of road contests to start MEC play as they travel to Notre Dame College for the conference opener on November 19th. After three straight road games to start the year, and two exhibitions, the Cardinals get their first taste of home cooking on November 22nd and 25rh when they take on Alderson Broaddus and Davis & Elkins.

The 2022 portion of their conference schedule ends when they hit the road for games against West Virginia State and West Virginia Wesleyan and one home game against Charleston. They have two more non-conference battles with Lake Erie University (December 19th) and Salem University (December 29th) to round out 2022. They open 2023 with one more non-conference game at home against Malone on January 2nd, but from then on our it is a sprint to the finish as the team prepares for the MEC tournament. January will see a heavy home schedule, with five of their first seven conference games in 2023 will be at home. They open on the road against Glenville State on January 4th and will have home contests against Concord (1/7), Fairmont State (1/11), Notre Dame (1/18), West Liberty (1/22), and West Virginia Wesleyan (1/25).

For as many times as they are at home in January, the team is on the road just as much in February as they round out the season. Of their eight games during the month, only three of those contests will be played at home. The Cardinals host West Virginia State on February 4th and the defending National Champions Glenville State on February 11th. They round out the home slate when they honor their seniors on February 18th when they battle Frostburg State. The Cardinals finish the year with back-to-back road contests against Alderson Broaddus and West Liberty as they try to seal their fate in the MEC Tournament. It will be a schedule that has it's challenges, but Wheeling is looking to. One out on top when all is said and done.

The Wheeling University Women's Basketball team kicks off their season on Saturday, November 12th, when they take on Lock Haven University in West Liberty, West Virginia. Check out the whole schedule by clicking HERE.
