Men’s Golfer Yadhu Urs has Strong Showing at 89th West Virginia Open Championship

37

The 2021-2022 season was a year of growth for the Wheeling University Men's Golf team as they had a young roster consisting of six freshmen and sophomores, some playing collegiate golf for the first time. While the team had its share of growing pains, one player stood out as the leader for the Cardinals and made it all the way to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championships, just missing a trip to Nationals by one spot. Yadhu Urs had a breakout sophomore campaign and continued that success into the summer, competing at the 89th West Virginia Open Championship that ran from June 22nd – June 24th.

Urs got the chance to compete against some of the best golfers from across West Virginia and was able to hold his own in the field. He finished in a tie for 24th and shot a 79 or under in each of the three rounds on the par 72 course at the Stonewall Jackson Resort. He was playing against some stiff competition that included West Liberty Head Coach Thadd Obecny and Marshall Head Men's Golf Coach Christian Brand and finished in a tie for 24th in the field. For Urs, it was a chance to test his skills against some of the best amateur golfers from around West Virginia.

The festivities began on June 22nd with the first round of play commencing and URs got out to a strong start, shooting at +3 for the day. He began the day on the back nine at hole 10 and hit a par, but a double bogey on 11 forced him to battle back. He would recover with a birdie on the next hole and added one more on hole 18 to bring him to +3 for the back nine. As he made his way to the front nine, Urs returned to the consistent play that he was known for last season, rattling off six pars on the first six holes. HE picked up his final birdie on hole seven and finished the front nine at even to end day one sitting in a tie for 24th.

Urs hit a bump in the road on day two of the event as the back nine once again caused some problems for him. He hit three bogeys in the first nine holes with a birdie on hole 12 to bring him to +3 as he moved towards the front nine. This time he hit seven pars on the nine holes but struggled on holes eight and nine to bring him to +6 for the day. However, it was a rough day for a lot of the competitors with only eight players shooting at even or under par for the day. Heading into the final day, URs was looking to gain ground and he did just that with his best performance of the tournament.

He finished at one over par for the day as he battled his way into the top 25, finishing the tournament with a three-round score of 227. His back nine performance greatly improved as he hit birdie three times and finished the back nine at -1, putting him in a tie for fourth on the day. As he moved to the front nine, He added two more strokes to his score but finished with an impressive 73. He finished the tournament tied with Marshall Men's Golf Alumni Noah Mullens. For URs, it was a continuation of what has been a strong Men's Golf season as he continues to train for 2022-2023.

The Cardinals athletic season is just 59 days away and we are excited to get our students back on campus. Wheeling Volleyball kicks things off on August 25th when they head to Pensacola, Florida to battle The University of West Florida.
