Peterson Rehabilitation and Healthcare accounted for the second largest nursing home in Ohio County during the first quarter of 2026, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reported.

Records indicate the facility offered 150 beds, which is 12 below the average number for Ohio County in the same time period. On average, it served 134.7 residents each day over the quarter.

The CMS assigned Peterson Rehabilitation and Healthcare an overall rating of 3 out of 5, surpassing the West Virginia nursing home average of 2.9.

Throughout the quarter, Good Shepherd Nursing Home held the position of largest nursing home in Ohio County, offering 192 beds. Continuous Care Center Wheeling Hospital placed third, providing 144 beds.

By the close of the first quarter of 2026, Peterson Rehabilitation and Healthcare incurred a total of $147,234 across four fines and faced four penalties.

There was one for-profit nursing home in Ohio County, West Virginia, at that time.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates show the country’s older population continues to rise as the number of younger Americans declines. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans aged 65 and older grew by 13%, while those younger than 18 dropped by 1.7%. The older adult population has increased sharply over the century, from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 study found that almost half of adults in this age category, around 28 million people, may require long-term services and supports. The research also predicts more than one-third will eventually need care within a nursing home.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
