During the first quarter of 2026, Moundsville Healthcare Center emerged as the largest nursing facility in Marshall County, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reported.

The facility offered 129 beds, surpassing the Marshall County average by 34 beds for the same period. On average, Moundsville Healthcare Center cared for 120.9 residents.

Moundsville Healthcare Center also received a 4 out of 5 overall rating from CMS, above the 2.9 average for nursing homes in West Virginia.

In comparison, Cameron Healthcare Center ranked as the county’s second-largest nursing home, providing 60 beds during the quarter.

By the end of the first quarter, Moundsville Healthcare Center had received two fines totaling $38,448 and incurred two penalties.

Altogether, Marshall County was home to two for-profit nursing homes as of the first quarter of 2026.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates show an ongoing rise in the nation’s older adult population as younger age groups decline. From 2020 to 2024, Americans age 65 and older increased by 13%, while those under 18 decreased by 1.7%. The older adult population in the United States has expanded significantly over the past century, growing from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 study found that nearly half of older adults, about 28 million people, may need long-term services and support. The research further indicates that more than one-third could eventually require care in a nursing home.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education group. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
