The Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston announced on May 7 that former Bishop Michael Bransfield has died. The diocese said he passed away peacefully.

The announcement is significant for members of the Catholic community in West Virginia, as Bransfield served as bishop for several years. His passing marks the end of an era for those who knew him and worked with him during his tenure.

“As it is the tradition in our Church to pray for the dead as well as for the living, we pray for the repose of his soul, asking God’s mercy upon him,” said the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston in its statement. The diocese also noted that his funeral and burial will not take place in West Virginia.

The diocese invited all faithful to offer prayers at this time “for his family, friends, and caregivers.” No additional details regarding funeral arrangements were provided.

Bransfield’s death brings a moment of reflection for many within the local church community. As people remember his service, prayers are being offered across parishes and among those who were close to him.
